Textbooks are an influential component in the public school curriculum. Content and images play a large role in the way students’ understand or perceive individuals and groups. This is especially true in resources like history textbooks. How a book represents cultural diversity (e.g., ethnoracial, gender, economic class, and so on) in the content and images can affect how students perceive their own potential to excel in the subject being discussed.
